My daughter hand feeds a food pellet to a giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis) during our visit to Fossil Rim Wildlife Center. For a fee, the park provides healthy food pellets to feed the giraffes and antelopes. The giraffe’s mouth is velvety soft with a hairy upper lip and a snakelike, purplish tongue nearly 18 inches long. The tongue is prehensile and can be wrapped around a single pellet of food or leaf.
